American Eagle Platinum Coin
A John M. Mercanti design, the U.S. platinum coin depicts the Statue of Liberty, America’s symbol of freedom, on the obverse side along with the mint year and below it, IN GOD WE TRUST. On the reverse is a soaring American Eagle over the earth and sun, under UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the mint mark, fineness, face value and Troy ounce.
Authorized by Congress in 1996 and first minted in 1997, the American Platinum Eagle was the first and only official platinum coin from the U.S Mint. The one ounce platinum coin displays the highest face value ($100) ever to appear on a U.S. coin. These coins have been struck at the Philadelphia and West Point mints.
