Mexican 50 Pesos (Centenario) Gold Coin
On the coin’s obverse is a portrait of the Winged Victory (El Angel) with a laurel wreath in her hand and the iconic Mexican volcanoes Ixtaccihuatl and Popocateptl to either side in the background. The date 1821 can be seen to the left commemorating the first year of Mexico’s independence from Spain. The reverse features the Mexican coat of arms with an eagle holding a serpent in its beak while perched on top of a cactus.
The Centenario, or 50 Peso Mexican gold piece, celebrates the 100th anniversary of Mexico’s independence from Spanish rule. First minted in 1921, it is believed to be one of the largest gold bullion coins minted for currency. The coins are unique in that there is more than one ounce of gold in the 50 Peso coin.
